India travel series #1: Queen of hills

This is my first post on travel and #1 does not indicate a rating. The posts in this series are in no particular order as of now. Shimla was the hill station that I last visited a couple of weeks back.

Shimla is an amazing place to visit over a weekend and I think Jan-Feb is about the right time to do so. The weather is pleasant, although a little on the colder side at nights, and its scenic beauty makes it a perfect place for a weekend get-away.

Places to visit: Mall road, The Ridge, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, 2nd oldest church in Northern India, Kufri (~16Km) – where you can find snow and ride on horses. For more places click here.

Stay suggestions: We stayed in a place called Bridge View hotel and I recommend it to others who plan to visit Shimla too. Cost for 2 (or if 3 in 1 room as we did) comes to around Rs.750 per night and the quality, service of the hotel is top class. Both mall road and the ridge are just a jump away from the hotel which makes it even more comfortable.

Time required: 2 days for stay

Distance: Capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla is 365Km from Delhi and 115Km from Chandigarh

How to get there: Train from Delhi to Kalka (~7 hours). Reach Kalka at 4.30AM and catch the 1st toy train from Kalka to Shimla (~100Kms) at 5.30AM. Toy trains take about 5.5 to 6 hours to reach Shimla as they are very slow but they offer a nice experience. There are buses available to Shimla to and fro. Buses take about 9 hours from Shimla to Delhi and vice-versa.

To get a snapshot of Shimla at your desk, have a look at this video I created from my trip:

Alternatively you can go directly here to watch it!
