What are you listening to now?

A few months back, Anuj Dayal, one of my juniors from IIT Kharagpur, sent me the link to this website www.musicovery.com . It is a sort of online radio which streams mainly English songs. At first, I could not understand how useful this site might be or if it was even worth spending time on. But after using it several times, I am happy to recommend this site to any one who likes music or wants to discover it!

This site is ideal for the following types of people:

  • I don’t want to store 30GB of music on my laptop and neither feel like carrying a hard-disk or mp3 player everywhere I go (Me!)
  • I want to party but damn! Forgot that I did not have 70’s rock collection on my system (Me too!)
  • Music freak! I want to explore unexplored bands of the 80’s before I start downloading
  • I just want to listen to some calm, soothing music and I am too lazy to build a play list

Irrespective of which one you are, Musicovery always has something for you! Below, I have listed the 7 key features offered by this site. All of these features are accessible for free!
Musicovery

Musicovery offers its services in the following ways to users:

  • Free user (not registered): You get to listen to songs by using the filters and that’s it! Quality of songs is Lo-Fi (However, I think the quality is good enough… it is audible!)
  • Registered – Free member: In addition to listening to songs you can select favourites or ban songs from your search criteria. Quality of songs is Lo-Fi.
  • Registered – Premium member (starting at 4$/m): You get to select favourites, ban songs and direct access to favorite songs. Quality is Hi-Fi.

I have registered as a free member at the site as I am comfortable with the Lo-fi songs and really don’t see a reason to pay a premium just to listen to Hi-Fi quality songs. But the point is you can enjoy Musicovery for free.

Musicovery provides easy graphics user interface which allows you to select the eras and genres of music you are interested in. Further, you can select the mood and tempo to further narrow your search. You can either listen to the hits or your favourites or let Musicovery discover unexplored music of the past. Their database is pretty good too. They started off with over 8000 songs and their classification of songs according to their filters is pretty good. I am sure there are other sites which provide customized playlists but most charge a monthly subscription fee or provide a limited number of songs for free (but correct me and do let me know if you come across wonders similar to Musicovery!). I think this is where Musicovery differentiates itself from the rest.

Recently, they have added other cool features – application for iTunes where you can use the same filters on your own music collection through iTunes! They also have a mobile application but I am yet to try out these new features. I hope Musicovery keeps adding newer features to their site and continue with what is a great place to visit for any music lover!

  • Nice… I just use winamp, and I find it much easier to use than itunes, even for ipods.

Nice post. Hope to see more posts, more regularly.

  • Yes winamp is better if you have stored music on your system… this website is good if you run out of space or you just want to listen to a particular genre for sometime and not download it. Posts on travel and photography to come soon :)
